RCO Frequency Decommissioning — What's Changing

Leidos and the FAA are decommissioning 674 of the 936 Remote Communications Outlet frequencies nationwide (49 states + Puerto Rico; Alaska not affected). 262 will be retained until further technology allows additional reductions, and 113 are being kept specifically to preserve 122.2 coverage. Leidos discontinues monitoring the identified frequencies on September 3, 2026.

The FAA's stated basis: daily frequency requests have dropped from over 22,000 in the 1980s to fewer than 300 today, attributed to mobile apps and FIS-B. This came out of a 2025 Federal Register notice originally proposing to decommission the entire CONUS RCO network; the current phased plan followed public comment and a Safety Panel review.

What pilots should do: check current NOTAMs and charts before every flight — frequency changes are being published there as each RCO goes dark. Review the Active CONUS FS Frequencies (download available at source link below) list and Flight Service Volumes coverage maps for your routes.
